AI (Artificial Intelligence) in the Online Classroom (Elon University/Pew Internet Project, n.d.)
AI in online education provides individualized instruction customized for each learner.
AI would make traditional teachers obsolete.
AI mass produces private tutoring, previously own available to the famous and wealthy.
AI replaces the need for generalized lesson plans that meet the needs of multiple learning styles.
Progression: AI in the online classroom exists today. It already exists in the online classroom. Educational software monitors an individual's skills, assesses, supports, and encourages learning using artificial intelligence. Jump Start's Reader Rabbit set my children up for success at the turn of the century. Today, the same model supports Pearson's MyMathLab, MyWritingLab, and other simulations supportive of AI instruction. At my university, we employ Capsim, a business simulation, and Labsim, an information technology simulation. Both are facilitated by activities that support learning, based on AI to route the student to appropriate levels and tutorials when they succeed or need additional support.
I expect it won't be long before online courses will include individualized avitars that facilitate the course navigation, material, and eventually discussions.

I have seen MyMathLab and MyWritingLab and they have fascinating potential for creating individualized instruction for students at different levels. LabSims are also excellent tools.
ReplyDeleteWhile AI might replace the traditional teacher, I do not think AI can ever really replace the essential teacher/facilitator. The role of the teacher as curator, facilitator, and mentor will always be essential in my view. The role of the teacher as the sage on the stage is long overdue for replacement.

ReplyDeleteJodie,
ReplyDeleteYour blog gives you the opportunity to talk to the world about your thinking on the application of the tetrad model to these technologies and then get feedback from your peers and other global readers.
This is also where we should be able to view your graphics for the tetrads. Try it all out here and get some feedback for your final project.
